Simon Byrne, RIP
5 January 2007You may have noticed this blog being awfully quiet over the last few days. Although I did intend to take some time off publishing over Christmas, my New Year’s was considerably different from what I expected.
Simon took ill suddenly on Friday evening. We believe a virus attacked his brain which caused massive swelling and bleeding. There was nothing medical professionals could do to save him.
I had the pleasure of really connecting with my best friend, and he inspired me in a myriad of ways. So many times after talking with him I would come home and start writing about something. A lot of the posts here are a result of our talks. Thank you, Simon.
Despite it being a truly terrible tragedy for all concerned, I have experienced so much growth, learnt so much, and been truly touched by what I’ve seen over the last few days. Simon had so many friends, and not just acquaintances, but people who he was truly dear to, and I was absolutely honoured to be a part of it all.
For me, it was like the compassion and lust for life my friend had exploded outward and has enriched the hearts of everyone he touched, and as a result, so many people will live a better life to honour an amazing soul.
I don’t want to repeat my eulogy to Simon, but I would like to thank Deirdre and Anthony, his loving parents, for allowing me to say a few words at his wake. I was deeply touched and moved to the point of overwhelm that I could say something that resonated with those present.
Over the next few weeks my posts will be reflective on the lesons I’ve learnt during this time. It’s unblieveably amazing how much this man gave to me, and continues to give to me by his memories and the friends I’ve now had a chance to connect with.
For those who’d like a glimpse of this extraordinary human being, you can visit his bebo page and have a look at the comments people posted.
Thank you my friend, I know your spirit and force are with me forever,
Mav (Colm)
